The importance of grasslands
Historically, elephants and other big mammals went to the lowlands during dry season, to look for grass in the floodplains.
As these lowland areas are not accessible anymore, substitutes are necessary.
There are grasslands within the park boundaries now.
Key is maintenance of these grasslands.
2 options are available; cutting and burning. Cutting is only a second choice, as the grass is not growing new, but rather only grow back. Furthermore, when cutting the grass
frequently (over years) the grass will become shorter and shorter and ultimately to short for elephants. So the best solution is burning.
